Windwhistle Farm Sloe Gin Championships
This year, 2010, will be the fifth championships.
It is an invitation only competition and will be held at Windwhistle
Farm on second Saturday in December.
Started in 2006 and run every year, it is a blind
tasting of the invited attendees locally produced Sloe Gin. Everyone
who enters blind tastes the competition and marks every entry out
10. The highest score wins.

Sloe's look like small red grapes or large blueberries
and are quite hard with a pip centre. They ripen during the summer
and are ready to pick about the time of the first winter frost.
They are quite temperamental plants and some years you get loads
of Sloe's and others very few.
Making Sloe Gin could not be easier, you prick the
sloes and add them to a bottle of gin. Add some sugar (not too much)
and then let the mix mature over the next few months. Turning the
bottles twice a day so that the sloe juice slowly blends with the
Gin to make the most delicious and strong winter warmer drink. Some
also make Sloe Vodka or my favourite, Sloe Tequila.
