Local places to eat & drink

There is a very varied selection of restaurants, gastro pubs and take aways in the West Somerset / North Devon area. Here is just a very small selection that we have tried and are happy to recommend:

Valiant Solider, Roadwater – The local Pub with good honest food and a great local atmosphere. Skittle ally in the back. It is 2 miles to The Valiant Solider down the hill into Roadwater. Ideal for dinner or Lunch. Fish and chips early on a Friday evening. Tel: 01984 640 223. Dogs welcome.

The Royal Oak, Luxborough – One of our favourites - this pub has a great reputation for good food. Very snug with open wood fires. Great beer and cider. The food is excellent and so you nearly always have to book in the evenings, but not usually lunch time. Lovely quite garden that does great cream teas. Lunches Very popular with the local Chargot shot for lunches. Dogs allowed in bar. It is 4 miles to The Royal Oak by road and 2 1/4 miles by footpath through Treborough village and then across Higher Court Farm. Tel: 01984 640 319 . Dogs welcome anytime. www.TheRoyalOakInnLuxborough.co.uk

Woods, Dulverton – Pub with Great food with a lovely atmosphere
Landlord Paddy Groves has effectively buried the notion that a gastro-pub has to be a sanitised former pub where you’re asked ‘are you eating?’ as soon as you come through the door. Inside the interior is comfortably rural, split between the bar and restaurant, though the two sides don’t feel too separate. The bar staff are friendly (especially the singing barman!), the food is excellent, the wine outstanding and the beer always well-kept. Tel: 01398 324007. Dogs welcome.

Ralegh's Cross Inn, It is 2 ¼ miles to Ralegh's Cross Inn by the "top" road and it has glorious views back over the cottages and over the Severn estuary and Wales. Busy pub with basic food. Originally a 16th century coaching inn it was central to the mining community that used to work the local quarries. It has some lovely old photographs on the walls. Tel: 01984 640 343 email: info@raleghscross.co.uk
Brendon Hill, Exmoor, TA23 0LN . Dogs NOT welcome.

We have not been able to check, so call before you go. Gastro Pub with good food, in front of the open fire in winter. Really pleasant atmosphere with unpretentious service. It is 4 1/2 miles to Lowtrow Cross from the cottages. Food served Wed-Sat 12noon to 2pm. Mon-Sat 6pm to 9pm. Sunday 12noon-2pm & 7pm-9pm (not open Mondays & Tuesday lunchtime except Bank holidays).
