Events & Festivals

at or near the Coleridge Way Cottages

Local events take place throughout the year and our guests are amazed at the range of attractions and activities available, with all-round favourites such as "Dunster By Candlelight" and the West Somerset Steam Railway. The Scuffle at Riphay is one of the last "best kept secrets" in motor racing calendar. This is a wild event and best viewed late afternoon and early evening. For a full list of events see our events and festivals list or go to Active Exmoor.

Dunster by Candlelight
Dunster by Candlelight takes place every year on the first Friday and Saturday in December when this remarkably preserved medieval village turns its back on the present and lights its streets with candles.

To mark the beginning of the festival on Friday at 5.30pm, there is the Lantern Lighting Procession that starts on the Steep and continues through the village until all the lanterns in the streets have been lit. The procession of children and their families is accompanied by colourful (and tall!) Stiltwalkers in fantastic costumes who put up the lanterns. http://www.dunsterbycandlelight.co.uk/ for more information

North Devon Festival
A celebration of the rich cultural life of North Devon. Every year over the month of June there are over 200 events in 80 towns and villages featuring top quality arts and entertainment alongside many events inspired and associated with the history, lifestyle and outstanding natural beauty of the area. Encompassing stunning coastlines, North Devon's Biosphere Reserve, the wild magnificence of Exmoor and the Culm Grassland of Ruby Country, you really are spoilt for choice!

Lynton and Lynmouth Music Festival
This year the music festival takes place on the 13th, 14th and 15th of June at various locations throughout Lynton and Lynmouth www.llama.org.uk

The Two Moors Festival
It is a long time since 2001 when the Two Moors Festival was set up to help regenerate Dartmoor, Exmoor and the area between the Moors after the ghastly devastation caused by Foot and Mouth disease. That first ever festival comprised ten days of intense music-making in very rural places. Since then however, the Festival has developed enormously so that it now ranks equal amongst other national and international festivals in Britain. The event in association with Classic FM takes place on the 9-19 October with many other events happening throughout the year. www.thetwomoorsfestival.com for further information.

Scuffle in Riphay
Basically a farmers day out with a 4X4, mixed with cider and mud, macking it a truly unbelievable event. If you are a petrol head then this will be one of the most amazing events you could go to.

Riphay started with a Scuffle, “A what?” I hear you say. Yep I said that as well but for those of you that don’t know what a Scuffle is, think of banger racing with mud, lots of thick deep mud — oh yes and water. I’m not sure if the organisers spend weeks beforehand topping up the mud holes or whether they are a natural existence. In fact it might be better if you think a little bigger than banger racing because there may have been more 4×4s in that Scuffle than there are bangers in the UK, I didn’t take the time to count them but they must have been in the hundreds — all churning around on a off-roading paradise.

By the time we got there it was getting a bit mental, many of the vehicles were wrecks only just holding together to make the circuit and many of the drivers just assumed that everyone else was driving a wreck and were ramming the car in front to get it through a sticky bit Well as the light faded so did the scuffle and the partying took over.

Do go, it is on the first Saturday in Augist and make sure you take loads of drink since everyone, including all the drivers seem to have a tinny in their hands. Do not go in a smart car as the car park is a mini scuffle in it's rights. Do go with old clothes and wellies and it is very muddy but above all go with a open heart and enjoy shear madness in the country.
